I had never been to Costa Rica or a yoga retreat before my experience with Yoga Caravan this past year. Shannon Hill and Lindsey Crow, two very talented yoga teachers, structured a retreat that perfectly combined meditation, the practice of yoga, and opportunities to get to learn more about this beautiful country. As a newbie when it comes to yoga retreats and a travel fanatic, I loved that the week balanced the practice with different excursions that took us out to heavenly waterfalls and beaches. The retreat center itself is set on top of a mountain surrounded by fruit and vegetable orchards. The sounds of the jungle lull you to sleep at night and ease you out of dreams in the morning. The days began with Shannon leading an early morning meditation practice soon followed with a more vigorous Vinyasa flow. The teachers also included workshops that focused on specific types of balances and poses.

Yoga Caravan was the perfect experience for me in that I was able to practice yoga with people I admire in a setting that is malleable enough to allow for peaceful meditation or raucous laughter during dinner.

Imagine yourself free of responsibility to home and work. Now imagine yourself surrounded by trees and flowers in a lush environment overlooking the Pacific Ocean. No pressures. Only morning and afternoon yoga practice, with freedom to read and write, to meditate, or to surf the waves, bathe in a waterfall, sit on a beach, or challenge yourself to scale rocks and soar through the jungle on a zip line.

That would be Selva Armonia in Uvita, Costa Rica. That would be Yoga Caravan with leaders you admire and trust, other yogis, some strangers, who you’d come to know over shared meals and shared laughter.

That would be an experience to remember.

I’m not sure I knew exactly what “yoga retreat” would entail when I decided to join Yoga Caravan to Costa Rica, but the reality far exceeded any expectations I may have had. The ladies behind it all—Shannon and Lindsey—do an incredible job of planning a getaway that’s a perfect combination of relaxation and adventure. So if you have even the slightest interest in meditation, laughing, yoga, poolside cocktails, epic sunsets, jungle spas, delicious meals, monkeys or surfing, you should sign up for the next Yoga Caravan trip!
